Nuttall's White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys nuttalli) is named after Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859), an English botanist and zoologist who lived and worked in America from 1808 until 1841. It is one of five subspecies of White-crowned Sparrow Zonotrichia leucophrys found in North America, and is the only subspecies found exclusively in California – endemic to a narrow band along the coast from northwestern California to Santa Barbara. The easiest identification is a tendency to have a fair amount of dark on the upper mandible of its very yellow bill.
