The largest white egret, this long-legged, S-necked great white egret (Ardea alba) is a member of the heron family. With a wingspread of 130 centimeters (55 inches), their wings are longer and wider than most other white herons. Adults have black legs and feet. In flight, the great egret holds its neck in a more open S-shape than do other white herons. The species utters a loud, low-pitched, hoarse croak. The sexes are similar in appearance but males are slightly larger. It is found near water, salt or fresh, throughout the Americas and much of the world. Also known as common egret, large egret or great white heron. In the 19th century, the great egret's beautiful white plumes were used to decorate ladies' hats.
