The saddle-backed bush cricket (Ephippiger ephippiger) is named because of the structure on its back resembles a saddle. Found in all of Europe except the British Isles, this yellow-green to blue-green round grasshopper has long probes, a banded back, black back of the head and a broad kinked neck shield in the shape of a saddle. The neck shield is slightly raised to accommodate the spongy golden-yellow wings which are no longer able to fly.
