The name of the Swahili sparrow (Passer suahelicus) originates from its geographic distribution in the Swahili region of East Africa. The specific epithet, suahelicus, is Latin meaning "of the Swahili coast/region". It is a plain East African sparrow, distinguished by its grey head extending to the mantle, and a rufous rump. It is found in East Africa (Kenya,Tanzania), favours dry savannahs, grasslands with scattered trees, light woodlands, cultivated areas, and human settlements, avoiding wetter zones.
