The white-breasted nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) is known as the “upside down” bird as it’s often observed creeping head-first down tree trunks while searching cracks and crevices for insects. It is stocky, with a large head, short tail, powerful bill, and strong feet. It breeds across North America, from southern Canada to northern Florida and southern Mexico.
