The California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) is probably named for a noticeable mane of hair around its neck. A coastal eared seal native to western North America, it is one of six species of sea lion. The Steller sea lion is the closest extant relative. The California sea lion ranges along the western coast and islands of North America, from southeast Alaska to central Mexico.
