As its name suggests, it prefers the dense undergrowth of forest edges and clearings, brushy bamboo, and montane forest. It is found in Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
