The South American or Lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) is one of the four recognised species in the tapir family alongside the mountain tapir, the Malayan tapir, and the Baird's tapir. Also known as the Brazilian tapir, it is the largest land mammal in South America. Not only can it wiggle tits nose, but it can use it to grab leaves when foraging. A strong swimmer, with the ability to cross rivers and take to the water to escape predators, it also moves quickly on land, even over rugged, mountainous terrain. The South American tapir is found throughout a wide geographic range, from North-Central Colombia and east of the Andes and including most of tropical South America.
