The Père David's rock squirrel (Sciurotamias davidianus), is named after Armand David, 1826-1900, a missionary Catholic priest as well as zoologist and botanist from the Pyrénées-Atlantiques département of France. Also known as the Chinese rock squirrel, it is endemic to China, where it is found widely in rocky habitats in the eastern and central parts of the country. It has a distinct pale eye-ring and a dark patch on the cheeks.
