The black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) named for its loud, nasal kitti-wake call, is idespread, being found in coastal regions throughout the northern hemisphere. The scientific name of tridactyla, which means three-toes, refers to the hind toe on its foot which is barely more than a bump. A medium-sized gull with a small yellow bill and a dark eye, it has a grey back and is white underneath. Its legs are short and black. There is also the red-legged kittiwake.
