The pink pigeon (Nesoenas mayeri) is endemic to to the Mascarene island of Mauritius and the tiny predator-free island of Isle aux Aigrettes off its east coast. A species of pigeon in the family Columbidae it became nearly extinct in the 1990s and is still very rare. It prefers upland evergreen forests, but is equally at home in coastal forests. Destruction of such primal forests has been a major reason for its decline.
