The shy and elusive Jambu fruit dove (Ptilinopus jambu) name refers to the bird’s bright pinkish-red head, which resembles the flower or fruit of the Malay rose apple tree (Syzygium malaccense), commonly known as the jambu or jambu merah in Malay. The bird is known as Punai jambu in Malay. Found in the rainforests of Southeast Asia, specifically in Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia, males and females look different. Males have a brilliant crimson face, pink breast patch, and dark green wings, while females have a dull purple face and green chest.
