Caterpillars are the larval stage of butterflies and moths. The life cycle has four parts: egg, larva (the caterpillar stage), pupa (the chrysalis stage), and adult (the butterfly or moth stage). As caterpillars grow, they shed their skin, or moult, as many as four or five times. A caterpillar must consume enough to ensure it has the energy to complete its metamorphosis.
