The rare Poitou, Poitevin, or Poitevine goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) are native to the Marais Poitevin, in the ancient province of Poitou, western France and are emblematic of the region. There is a popular legend that goats were left by Arab warriors after their defeat in 732 at the battle of Poitiers. Known for their use in goat milk cheese production, the Poitou have long, shaggy hair, are black-brown with white marks on the head and neck, while the underbelly and legs are white.
