The shy red-necked spurfowl or red-necked francolin (Pternistis afer) has a distinctive bare red throat and the legs of both males and females have one or two spurs, which give them their name. Usually confined to a habitat of dense cover associated with moist regions of evergreen forest edges, the edges of marshes and thickets, the Red-necked Spurfowl breeds across the central belt of Africa and down the east coast to Tanzania. There are seven sub-species, all of differing sizes.
