The brown-throated parakeet (Eupsittula pertinax), commonly known as the St Thomas conure or brown-throated conure, has 14 recognised subspecies. It typically nests in a termite mound located in a tree. It will also nest in rock crevices and will burrow in banks when an arboreal termitarium is not available. It is found widely in woodland, savanna and scrub in northern South America including Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas - and also has been introduced to several Caribbean islands and the Virgin Islands including St Thomas - hence its alternative name.
