The Australasian barn owl (Tyto alba delicatula), also known as the eastern barn owl, is a medium-sized ghostly white predator famous for its silent flight and acute hearing. Their white facial disc acts like a satellite dish, capturing and channelling sound directly into their asymmetric ears – one is higher than the other allowing the owl to pinpoint the exact location of rustling prey in total darkness. They spend the daylight hours roosting in deep tree hollows, caves, or abandoned farm buildings, waking at dusk to hunt. The Australasian barn owl is generally smaller, darker, and more heavily speckled underneath than the classic pale European Barn Owl.
