The Puna teal (Spatula puna) is named from the Puna de Atacama, a plateau in the Andes, and was first identified by the Swiss naturalist Johann Jakob von Tschudi in 1844 under the binomial name Anas puna. It is abundant throughout its range in Andean pampas marshes from central Peru to north western Argentina.
