The ruddy – or black-tailed – mongoose (Urva smithii) usually carries its black tipped tail tip curved upward which is visible from a distance. Both male and female ruddy mongooses have reddish-brown fur, which gives them their name. Native to hill forests in India and Sri Lanka, it is distinguished from the Indian grey mongoose by its slightly larger size and jet black-tipped tail. Mainly a forest-living animal preferring more secluded areas, a special characteristic is its ability to climb trees. It hunts by day and by night, and feeds on birds, snakes, land monitors, rodents and snails.
