The yellow oriole (Icterus nigrogularis), a vibrant bird known for its bright yellow plumage and distinctive song, is the symbol of the Colombian town of Santander de Quilichao, which was named the first "Bird City" in South America. This oriole is a common sight in the woodlands and scrublands of neotropical parts of South America and the Caribbean including Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. It builds distinctive pendant-shaped nests from woven grass or palm fibers, often on the tips of branches overhanging water.
