The Madagascar blue pigeon or Madagascan blue pigeon (Alectroenas madagascariensis) has striking blue plumage and is endemic to Madagascar, found primarily in the northern and eastern evergreen forests, but it can also be seen in plantations, rural gardens, and other disturbed areas. It was first described by French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson in 1760 using the French name "Le pigeon ramier bleu de Madagascar". Carl Linnaeus later gave it the binomial name Columba madagascariensis in 1766, directly referencing its origin in Madagascar. It is unusually silent for a pigeon, emitting only subtle coos.
