The Padovana chicken (gallina patavina / Gallus gallus domesticus 'Padovana') is an ancient, elegant Italian breed from Padua, famous for its stunning head crest (pom-pom) and beard. Due to their large crest, their vision can be impaired. The Italian name is "Padovana dal gran ciuffo," which translates to "Paduan of the large tuft". The earliest known artistic depiction is in a fresco from 1397 by Jacopo da Verona in the Oratorio di San Michele in Padova, showing a crested hen. There are multiple colour varieties (gold, silver, black, white, etc.).
