The cheetal or chital (Axis axis) – also known as spotted deer or axis deer – name derives from the Hindi cītal or from the Sanskrit citrala, both of which mean "variegated", in reference to the spotted coat of the deer. It lives in grasslands and forests in India and Sri Lanka. The male has branching, usually three-tined antlers up to 100 cm long.
