Australia’s rarest waterfowl, the freckled duck (Stictonetta naevosa) is also known as the monkey duck or the oatmeal duck. It breeds in swamps in inland Australia, though in the drier summer months, the Freckled Ducks are forced to disperse towards coastal and subcoastal wetlands. Freckled Ducks feed at dawn and dusk and at night on algae, seeds and vegetative parts of aquatic grasses and sedges and small invertebrates.
