The Eastern Orphean warbler (Sylvia crassirostris) name refers to the mythical musician and singer Orpheus – the genus name is from Modern Latin silvia, a woodland sprite, related to silva, a wood. The specific name crassirostris comes from the Latin crassus, meaning "heavy" or "thick" and rostris, meaning "-billed”. So the orphean is a thick-billed sprite. It is one of Europe's largest warblers and has a breeding range which extends from Spain through to Turkey and parts of Asia. Its song is more varied than the western Orphean warbler, approaching the Nightingale in richness.
