The Ural owl (Strix uralensis) gets its name from the Ural Mountains, which is part of its natural range. It is a large species of owl found throughout Northern Europe and Asia. They have mixed plumage, which is mainly brown with flecks of grey, cream and white. They have a large, white, facial disc, the shape of which helps them to hear moving prey. Ural owls are a monogamous species who remain with their mates for life and maintain the same territory for many years. The Ural Owl lives in mature, but not too dense, deciduous and mixed forest with clearings and is active mainly at night, with peaks at dusk and just before dawn.
