The black redstart found in India is Phoenicurus ochruros rufiventris. It is found from Turkmenistan eastwards through Pamir and the Alay Mountains to Himalaya. It is darker overall, with a black back and rufous-chestnut underside. Females have a rufous tinge to underside. The black redstart is socially monogamous. A male pairs with a female to rear young, guards her against other males, and mates with other females.
