The Malabar whistling thrush (Myophonus horsfieldii) was nicknamed the whistling schoolboy by Salim Ali, the 'grand old man' of Indian ornithology, for the whistling calls it makes at dawn that have a very human quality. Once popular as a cage bird because of its ability to learn entire tunes, the bird is found in the Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats, and Satpura range.
