The dark-capped bulbul's (Pycnonotus tricolor) scientific name comes from the Greek for “thick back”, apparently a reference to the thickly feathered backs of these birds; and tricolor from the Latin for “three colours”. Found in central, eastern and south-eastern Africa, it used to be known as the Black-eyed bulbul, as it is only the colour of the eyes and the eye-rings that distinguishes it from the Red-eyed bulbul. The Dark-capped bulbul has predominantly grey-brown upper parts and white under parts, with its head being darker. The breast is grey-brown and it has a bright yellow vent.
