The dusky eagle-owl (Ketupa coromanda) is a large greyish-brown owl with prominent ear tufts (long feathers that aren't ears at all) and yellow eyes. Widespread in South and Southeast Asia, it is often active during daytime though is mostly active at night. This is a top predator – it hunts other animals for food but no animals hunt it on a regular basis. When hunting, the dusky eagle owl perches in tall trees – forests, wooded wetlands, agricultural areas with scattered groves, roadside avenues with old large trees – usually near water, where it waits for birds and mammals to pounce upon. Found in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia, there are two recognized subspecies – one in South Asia, one in South East Asia.
