The red-throated bee-eaters (Merops bulocki) have a distinctive red throat, blue under tail coverts, and green wings with a blue line. They live and breed in colonies, often in the same nesting area year-round, digging tunnels in sandy banks or cliffs to create nesting sites. Its African range extends from Senegal and Gambia in the west to Uganda, southern Sudan, and Ethiopia in the east. To the east of the Central African Republic, the birds have blue facial features while to the west these features are green. Red-throated bee-eaters primarily inhabit savannahs with scattered trees, farmlands with trees, and the edges of marshes and gardens. They are also found near streams, rivers, and erosion gullies, as they nest in the banks of these waterways.
