Temminck's Stint (Calidris temminckii) is named after the Dutch naturalist Coenraad Jacob Temminck. The genus name is from Ancient Greek kalidris or skalidris, a term used by Aristotle for some grey-coloured waterside birds. It is similar in size to the Little Stint, but with a distinctly longer silhouette and an extension of the tail beyond the primary tips. It usually occurs singly or in very small groups, in marshy places instead of open mudflats. Temminck's stint breeds on wet moorland mainly in Scandinavia and Russia; migrants occur in a wide variety of wetland habitats across Africa and southern Asia.
