Elliot's pheasant (Syrmaticus ellioti) was named in 1872 by British naturalist Robert Swinhoe, stating it was to commemorate American ornithologist Daniel Giraud Elliot's magnificent work on pheasants and because no other pheasant species bore his name. A large pheasant native to south-eastern China, it inhabits subtropical forest-types and scrub.
