The North American great horned owl (Bubo virginianus), also known as the tiger owl or the hoot owl, has no horns – it is named for the tufts of feathers that sit on top of its head, called plumicorns. An extremely powerful predator, it can take down birds and mammals even larger than itself, but it also dines on daintier fare such as tiny scorpions, mice, and frogs.
