The black-spotted barbet (Capito niger) is brightly patterned with a primarily black upper body, featuring white spots and streaks on the breast and belly. The male has a red forehead, a yellowish crown and nape, and a black band from the lores to the nape, with a red throat and yellowish underparts. The female is similar but more heavily marked, with pale flecks on the black upperparts and spotted or streaked breast and belly. The black-spotted barbet is found in northern Amazonia, from eastern Venezuela through the Guianas to northeast Brazil.
