The Variable Seedeater (Sporophila corvina) is named because of its geographically variable appearance. Males of the northern subspecies are entirely black, but the amount of white in the plumage increases the further south it occurs from south-eastern Mexico south to western Colombia, Ecuador, and extreme north-western Peru.
