The crested barbet (Trachyphonus vaillantii) has colourful head, with black crest and has the nickname "fruit salad" for its random, mixed plumage colouration. Its scientific name commemorates François Levaillant, a famed French naturalist. The territorial and aggressive Crested Barbet spends most of its time bouncing on the ground, searching for food. Crested Barbets are common in Southern Africa.
