The common name and the specific epithet of the Marail guan (Penelope marail) originate from Marai, the Carib word for a guan. Also known as the Cayenne guan, it is a medium-sized, dark-coloured rainforest bird with a reddish-brown belly, white-speckled throat and chest, and a distinctive red dewlap.Typically found alone or in pairs, it feeds on fruit in the forest canopy or near the ground, and is known for its sluggish behavior. Found in Venezuela, the Guianas, and Brazil, the Marail guan mainly inhabits mature, humid, tropical lowland forests, especially terra firme forest (non-flooded forest with dense undergrowth), but can also be found in secondary forests and occasionally near water.
