The pale-billed araçari or pale-mandibled aracari (Pteroglossus erythropygius) name refers to the colour of the bird's bill, which distinguishes it from other closely related aracaris, such as the collared aracari or fiery-billed aracari, which have more brightly coloured or patterned bills. Despite its large size (up to 5 inches long), the bill is lightweight due to a honeycomb-like structure of air pockets. The edges of the bill are serrated, like a steak knife, to help them grasp and open fruit.It typically travels in groups of six to eight who forage for food together. The pale-billed aracari is endemic to the wet forests of western Ecuador and north-western Peru.
