The chestnut munia (Lonchura atricapilla) name originates from Hindi and Urdu (muniya), which historically translates to "little mind" or "small bird." Also known as the black-headed munia, it is a highly sociable, seed-eating finch native to Southern and Southeast Asia, where it inhabits open grasslands, agricultural wetlands, and rice fields. It has a hidden brick-red patch on its lower back and rump that is only visible when the bird is in flight.
