The crowned eagle, also known as the African crowned eagle or the crowned hawk-eagle (Stephanoaetus coronatus) is named for the long crest on its head which can be raised. It is not the largest eagle in Africa — the martial eagle claims that title — but it is the most powerful. Crowned eagles eat snakes – including poisonous ones – as well as mammals heavier than itself such as antelope and vervet monkeys.
