The Superb Fruit Dove (scientific name Ptilinopus superbus) gets its superb name from its stunning, vibrant colours, particularly the male's striking purple crown, green body, and orange/yellow underparts, making it a truly magnificent and superb looking bird. It is a compact bird, with short rounded wings and a short tail. The male has a purple crown (it is also known as the purple-crowned fruit dove) an orange hindneck, a blue-black breastband that separates a grey upper breast from white underparts. The female Superb Fruit Dove is predominantly green, offering camouflage in rainforests. It lives in rainforests and woodlands of Australasia, from New Guinea and Indonesia (Sulawesi) through the Solomon Islands, to coastal Australia (Queensland & NSW), preferring rainforest canopies, margins, mangroves, and wooded streams, feeding almost exclusively on small fruits and berries. It has a large gape, which allows it to swallow bulky items.
