A vibrant, fruit-eating South American bird known for its beautiful song and unique feeding habits, the Violaceous Euphonia (Euphonia violacea) name comes from the Latin word violaceus, meaning "violet-coloured," which describes the male bird's striking violet-blue plumage. The "Euphonia" part of the name is derived from Greek (eu for "good" and phōnē for "sound"), referring to the bird's pleasant, melodious singing. It is a resident breeder from Trinidad, Tobago and eastern Venezuela south to Paraguay and northeastern Argentina.
