The elusive, shy, black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) – Europe's largest woodpecker – is closely related to the pileated woodpecker of North America. (See pileated woodpecker). The adult male has black plumage with a red central forehead to hind crown. Its range spreads east from Spain across the whole of Europe, excluding Great Britain, Ireland, and northern Scandinavia. It is also native to parts of Asia, including Korea, Japan and China, and the Middle East.
