A small, rotund wading bird, similar to the ringed plover, the little ringed plover (Charadrius dubius) differs from the larger ringed plover by its head pattern, its clear yellow eye-ring, and its legs which are pale not orange. It also lacks a white wing-bar when seen in flight. It nests on bare gravel around the coast, flooded gravel pits and reservoirs across the Palearctic including northwestern Africa. Plovers will feign a broken wing to draw attention to itself and away from its nest or chicks.
