The Victoria crowned pigeon (Goura victoria), the largest pigeon species in the world, is named after Queen Victoria of England as a commemoration of the former queen. It is part of a genus of three unique very large, ground-dwelling pigeons native to the New Guinea region. Victoria crowned pigeons spend most of their time in small groups on the ground, looking for fallen fruit, seeds and insects to eat. They only fly into trees when they feel threatened or to sleep at night. They mate for life. They have a unique ability to produce milk for their youngster, also called ‘crop milk’, with which both parents feed their young in the first few days of life.
