The blue-winged kookaburra (Dacelo leachii) is a large species of kingfisher native to northern Australia and southern New Guinea. it is slightly smaller than the more familiar Laughing Kookaburra, has a big square head and a long bill and a distinctive pale eye. Males have a dark blue tail while females' tails are barred red-brown or blackish. Otherwise the sexes are similar. It is found in coastal and subcoastal areas in northwest and northeast Australia, Torres Strait and Southern New Guinea. Blue-winged Kookaburras are also known as Barking Jackass, Howling Jackass and Leach’s Kookaburra.
