The Golden-fronted woodpecker (Melanerpes aurifrons) has a black-and-white barred back, an orange-yellow hind neck (back of the neck) and white rump. The underparts are pale greyish, with yellow centre of belly. Males can be identified by their red caps. It occurs in North and Central America, thriving in dry arid brushlands where on the prickly pear cactus - one of its favourite foods.
