Broad tailed hummingbirds (Selasphorus platycercus) are named for the broad, rounded tail of both males and females – both also have iridescent green backs and crowns and a white breast. The Broad-tailed Hummingbird is mostly a migratory species and can be found from Mexico to California to the Central Rocky mountains and they generally will be found in the higher elevations. During courtship the male will hover at great heights above the female, make a unique trill sound with his wings and then dive down to the female putting on a pretty cool show. They might use the same tree each year to nest in.
