The red river hog (Potamochoerus porcus) or bushpig, has striking orange to reddish-brown fur, with black legs and a tufted white stripe along the spine. The smallest of the African pigs on average, with most of its distribution in the Guinean and Congolian forests, it is rarely seen away from rainforests, and generally prefers areas near rivers or swamps. Similar in appearance to the warthog, the latter is a lot larger than the red river hog – and warthogs are typically more active during the day, while red river hogs are nocturnal. The red river hog's powerful body and long snout make it easy to forage for root-type vegetables. They are omnivores, eating both meat and plants, and use their outstanding snout to locate and uncover food.
